PORT WELSHPOOL
Welcome and thanks for all the new subscribers, i'm aware for a lot of you reading this, will be the first report you have received so i hope you guys enjoy. To those that haven't been here for a while, we have now moved to 29 Church St in Traralgon to a bigger store, feel free to call us on 0351748544 if you have any inquiries.

Welcome back for this months report. SQUID, SQUID AND MORE SQUID....Corner Inlet is one of Victoria’s prime locations for chasing calamari and this month has given us some absolute cracking sessions on them. The sizes are really good with heaps around that 30cm hood mark and some absolute krakens at 40cm plus as well. Size 3.0 and 3.5 jigs are a must to get down the bottom quickly and not waste time and also to combat the fast currant that is present at corner inlet and port Albert. The bets colours this month have been Yamashita Live jigs in the red foil colors, but golds have probably been my second choice. Prime locations have been the Lewis channel and Toora Channel with an hour either side of the tide change being the prime time to get a bag of squid. At Port Albert, the calamari are going really well in the Port Albert Channel a few hundred meters either side of the basket beacon and Midge channel as well, with the tide changes being the best.

In other news, the water temp is still cold but rising fast and the gummy sharks have just come on the chew out the front with Port Albert producing some ripper gummies in 13m and in 21m around the corner out front of Mcloughlin’s and Mann’s beach. Out really wide there’s stack s of big flathead that can be caught on the drift with snapper snatchers and pilchards. They have been caught between 30m and 45m. Inside Mcloughlin’s and Mann’s beach there are some thumping salmon getting caught to 6 pounds and plenty around the 2-3 pound mark as well with some good sized trevally mixed amongst them too. Soft plastics fished on heavy 1/4oz to 3.8oz jig heads have been the best way to target the salmon and the trevally have been caught on lighter jigheads with a more finesse method and smaller plastics, this has been producing some good Estuary Perch as well. Lastly we are all obviously waiting for the snapper to show up and I can guarantee you they are there but they will still be hard to catch till about the first of second week of October so get ready, snapper season is only a few days away!

Last week managed to get our bag of calamari pretty easily with the squid going red hot about 1 hour either side of the side. As you can see the Yamashita Jigs were awesome! Most of the squid were 30-34cm hood length.

Steve Marland couldn't resist heading offshore to chase an early season gummy last week. He managed to catch these 2 thumpers in 27m of water and released another 2 as well.

Ben Barnes and crew have been smashing the calamari lately at Welshpool lately, this day didnt dissapoint wither. The yamashita Live jigs and Shimano Warm Jacket Jigs were the most successful.



PORT ALBERT TO MCLOUGHLIN'S

WESTERN PORT

Greg Miller and the fellas has an amazing session on the gummy sharks at Western Port. They fished over night and landed there bag of 6 gummies between the 3 of them and released over another 10 as well. They said it was the most awesome fishing they ever had and was unexpected. Doesn't get much better than that fellas.

Another Greg has caught the biggest squid i have ever seen at Western Port. The hood of this beast measured over 50cm and the calamari weighed over 4kg. I don't think they get any bigger than that! Unbelievable. Westernport produces some big squid!

Our local correspondent Mo, with his crew has landed there bag of whiting in tough conditions just a few days ago in the late afternoon. That's a top effort in a very difficult whiting season.
