February saw some mixed conditions with a few breezy days making things tough. The fishing on the better days was great and saw guests get into some great fishing. We also got some much needed rain which will be a good thing for the fishing in the months ahead.
The fishing has been fantastic the past 2 weeks with longtails, queenfish, mac tuna, spotted mackerel, golden trevally and more moving in and causing havoc. Good longtail catches have kept anglers busy with plenty of double hook ups and great surface strikes. Working stick baits has been fun for the longtails along with the good old reliable Zman Streakz in bubble gum.
March we will continue to see similar action and should see even more longtails move in. Queenfish will be also about in the tuna schools along with the mac tuna and various mackerels. On the flats golden trevally, longtail tuna, mac tuna and queenfish will be present and will be a good target for both lure and fly anglers.
This time of year can also be great working lures deeper in the water column. Micro jigging is very effective when all the bait is about and can really be lucky dipping at times. Golden trevally are a sucker for jigs and often turn up around the tuna schools. Our guests have had some great sessions of late when this happens. The inshore reefs have also been producing and should continue to through March.
Catch of the month
Autumn is such a great time of year for pelagic fishing, with longtail tuna being the star attraction. If you are interested in some Autumn action drop us an email fishing@herveybaysportfishing.com.au.
