Report 21/6/18

Post by subeditor » Thu Jun 21, 2018 3:27 pm

The Maroochy River has had a burst of crabs with catches taken thru out the entire system. Well baited pots with fresh mullet is showing the better catches. Tailor were taken around the Cod Hole stretch and just inside the mouth of the river with most fish taking lures. Keep an eye out for the tailor pushing the bait fish up into the shallows and if this happens start throwing small metal lures at the school. Few flatties in the lower reaches with the soft plastics doing most of the damage. Best areas have been around Goat and Channel Island on the last of the run in tide with silver glitter and pinks the preferred colour patterns. Looking to fish the run in try the shallows along Chambers Island and Picnic Point for some decent whiting. Recent fresh in the river in the river has seen big whiting taking worms, live yabbies and soldier crabs. Make sure to have a long fluro carbon trace connected to a good sized sinker ensuring it stays locked in one location. Lure fisherman have seen bream on the increase with throwing small grub plastics at the pontoons and structures along the Duporth Ave channel. Just inside the mouth near Pin Cushion is certainly the spot for Trevally and queenfish with most catches received on surface lures and metal slugs.

Offshore fisherman had the advantage of light winds over the show weekend allowing access to all the popular reefs. The close in reefs that performed well included the Gneerings, Coolum, Currimundi and Murphy’s Reef giving angler’s catches of mixed reef such as maori cod, grass sweetlip, snapper, parrot and pearl perch. Try quality baits like pillies, and local squid to ensure better catches. There are still a heaps of long tails from the bay at Mooloolaba and right to the north off Noosa, just keep a good eye out for birds working and keep your lures small and shaped like small bait to improve your catches. Out on the Barwon Banks is where the snapper are on the run with the middle to the bottom of the banks now producing the fish. Pearl perch are really sizing up well for the season with the bottom end of the banks and wide caloundra showing the fish. Stick to fishing depths in the 50m to 60m mark. All species responded well to local squid, pillies, live baits and butterflied slimey’s.

The local beaches are showing good catches thanks to the light winds and a temperature drop during the week allowing a few chopper tailor to hangout our local gutters. Most reports came from just on dark and after along the Marcoola to Pin Cushion Stretch so keep a sharp eye out as catches will increase over the coming week. Best baits were the trusty blue pilchard on a gang of three 4/0 hooks rigged with a quality tough leader. Still a few good flatties on the Marcoola stretch with the high tide gutters and baby blue pillies showing the better catches. Yaroomba to Mudjimba section is holding dart and whiting with the bigger dart at the rear of the gutter on the last half of the run in tide and the whiting on the start of the run out. Good jew hiding in the deeper gutters north of Marcoola to Yaroomba Rocks with either live worms on the open beach or fresh mullet strips on the rocks at night. Nice bream in the gutters at the moment with the run in tide at night on salted bonito fillets showing the best catches. Most reports came from just on dark and after along the Marcoola to Pin Cushion Stretch so keep a sharp eye out as the sizes will increase over the next few weeks.
