Report 21/6/18

Post by subeditor » Thu Jun 21, 2018 3:28 pm

Our winter angling season on the Mid North Coast is now in full swing, and the results achieved from pretty well all locations have been simply first class. If you haven’t already done so, now is definitely the time to don the winter woollies and enjoy what is arguably some of the best angling action of the year.

In the estuary, bream numbers have been excellent with the break walls producing top fish to around a kilo during both evening and early morning sessions. Bag limit catches have been common, particularly by those using gut baits or yabbies during evening sessions. A few nice tarwhine have also been mixed in with the bream. Those fishing the North wall have been scoring some nice school mulloway, with whole squid and beach worms both working well. Further upstream, flathead action remains excellent, with lures and whitebait achieving the better results. Blackfish numbers have also been consistent with both break walls and the Lady Nelson Wharf producing nice fish on both green weed and cabbage. Still a few nice whiting in Big Bay and Lake Cathie with yabbies working particularly well.

On the beaches, bream numbers are now as good as we have seen all season, with most stretches of sand holding quality winter fish in varying numbers. Mullet and tailor strips have been the gun baits however worms and pipis have also worked well. Along with the bream, Lighthouse has held a few nice tailor to around 2 kilos, along with a sprinkling of salmon and school mulloway.

Off the rocks, our winter staples, ie bream, tailor, blackfish and drummer are all around in good numbers. Locally Lighthouse as always is holding tailor, as to Hat Head in particular. Best drummer reports of late have come from the ledges south of Port, with cunjevoi and large peeled prawns the baits of choice. Diamond Head is well worth prospecting if you are after some quality pigs. On the bream front, Miners after dark is reported to be fishing very well indeed.

Offshore, snapper numbers have been excellent with pretty well all reefs worth a look. If you are into throwing plastics, you could do a lot worse than to head to the close in grounds of Lighthouse beach or Lake Cathie, with some very nice fish on offer. Wider out, a few cracking pearl perch to around 3 kilos have been taken off Plomer, along with teraglin, mulloway and the odd kingfish. However for mahi mahi enthusiasts, please be aware the FAD has been removed for winter maintenance, so no point wasting time and fuel searching for it.
