Report 3/8/18

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Aug 03, 2018 11:17 am

August has started with a bank and a few warm days, but freezing morning and late afternoons. The school mackerel were on for weeks then had a break for 4 days over the weekend, of course so all fishermen who could get out missed out -- and then the mackerel started feeding again on Monday and all through the week, with plenty of fish being caught. The rous channel and small boat channel crossing is where they have been, but a few kilometers from the first yellow to the next yellow on the marrom bank side some days in 14 ft other days in 18 ft but they are there. I anchored up one day to just try pillies and i couldn't stop catching them, so if you don't want to troll, drifting or anchoring up with a little berley will work as well.

The basin at peel in front of the lazaret had a few schoolies as well, the place then did not was the sand hills and shark spit. I would suggest over the next few weeks the naval reserve banks towards peel will be good as there is lots of bait and a few bonito showing up.

The fishing for arrow squid and cuttlefish in the deeper water east of the close bay islands and the mainland has been great for these tasty morsels. As you can see from the photo below, regular report reader Mark Flynn took out the kids, and judging by their smiles they had lots of fun. I can't believe there is no ink on any of the girls! All the great photos and emails from readers of Fishing Monthly reports is why I love doing this.

Nice couple of days on the bay weather was perfect and the schoolies turned up in big numbers in the basin in front of the lazaret BUT you needed run in the tide for them to be on especially incomming ,as soon as tide slowed they were off the bite,on friday afternoon the whole basin was completely full of bait ,and as mentionned last week all that bait that was on the naval reserve banks looks like it all went in the basin and the schoolies found it..it was amazing as was saturday morning ..the whiting in the small boat channel were thick and a few lovely tiger squid as well as a few tailor ..great few days on the bay and plenty of fish.

well friday saturday were glorious days on the bay we decided to have a troll to the small channel for some whiting and only a kilometer past the hyubers the schoolies were thick we only did afew turns and we had 8 mackerel on board ,so of we went to the small boat channel anchored up on the first weed bank on the southern side and the whiting were thick ,so they have moved to the start as well as all the way thru to the rous quality not as good as last week but plenty.water was a little merky and did not see any tiger squid at all.
we decided on the lazaret for the afternoon outgoing tide and we were very happy with a nice squire around the 60 cm mark and lost a few to bring back all the swear words i learnt growing up.and another nice couple of fish in the last of the outgoing tide saturday morning and it was time to see if the schoolies were on the amity banks and as the tide turned they were there but in 13 to 15 ft mark had to have the boards very short behind the boat but plenty of mackerel not big fish all around the 55 to 60 so home for a fresh feed of fish and chips.

good day on the bay whiting masters family and kids came out for a day of whiting fishing and they had a ball ,lots and lots of whiting in the weed banks at the start of the small boat passage, so the kids really enjoyed the fun, also plenty of schoolies early morning at the basin at peel but you had to be in the right spot.my doctor was too sick to go to work but amazingly he was able to bag out on schoolies, he did look much better after that. it was good to see his uncle george was with him to make sure he was ok and to take his medication, but seems he got much better as he pulled in mackerel after mackerel. fishing, the best medicine in the world.

A few really nice days on the bay with plenty of fish everywhere in the southern bay.the school mackerel have taken residence in the basin opposite the lazaret, with sometimes being in very shallow water 11ft to 14 ft but you just need to troll around or anchor up and float out some pillies but if you put the time in you will get a feed(and remember 50cm is the legal size for schoolies) and please give a little space to the pro fisherman hand lining its there livelihood, and there are plenty around for us.
The whiting have moved all over the rous channel and the entrance to the small boat channel but size is better closer to the rous then the start of the small boat passage. but plenty about as there is also some arrow squid around.
we managed some lovely squire at green with the start of the outgoing tide on thursday and dropped a couple as well, so a feed is not hard to get at the moment.
there were also some really good size schoolies east of the hyubers before the trench heading towards the hope banks with the incoming tide.
