Report 4/1/19

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jan 04, 2019 5:42 pm

Hi Everyone, hope you’ve all had a great New Years and had a chance to get out for a fish. The weather has been great for spending some quality time fishing on the Gold Coast. Our Coomera Houseboat Holidays customers have been having a fantastic time exploring the Broadwater and Jumpinpin area. Let’s have a look at what’s been biting.

Local Whiting fishing guru Wayne Young has been at it again scoring a nice feed from the Nerang River this week using worms as bait. Reports from the river have been a bit up and down this week due to lots of extra boat traffic, fishing at night has been the best option. Rig of choice is an extra-long 6lb fluro carbon leader, size 6 short bait holder hook and either a 4 to 5 ball sinker depending on tidal flow to keep your bait in the bite zone. Other good spots have been the Coomera River North and South arms, Pimpama River, Logan River, Canaipa Passage, Wave Break Island Western Side and Eastern End of Tiger Mullet Channel. Worms and Yabbies are great bait.

With the larger swell hanging around fishing offshore has been left up to the more experienced skippers this week, we have seen a run of little Black Marlin which is nice to see and hopefully a sign for a good summer ahead. Some nice Dolphin fish have also shown up as a very welcome bycatch.

Whilst most anglers are thinking Pelagic species during summer, bottom fishing can still be great depending on the current. Customers have been scoring some quality Snapper, Pearl Perch, Trag Jew and Moses by finding a good show on the sounder, using plenty of burley and float lining large whole squid and WA Pilchards. With a bit more current around you will need a bit more weight than normal. The 18 and 24 fathom reefs are your best bet. Palm Beach and Mermaid reef are producing the odd Spotted and a few Spanish mackerel, good numbers of fish are yet to make an appearance, and hopefully they are not too far away.

Customers have reported good catches of Mangrove Jack showing up this week. The Coomera River has been fishing well so far this season. If you are prepared to put in the time hopefully you will be rewarded. Live and dead baits have been producing plenty of nice Jacks, just a matter of whether you can drag them out of the snags before they bust you off. Some other good spots to look at are the Sanctuary Cove, Sovereign Islands, Cobby Passage, Logan River, Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well, Runaway Bay Canals and the Nerang River. When fishing in the canals just keep moving around and cast at all the pontoons and bridge pylons.

Despite the extra boat traffic Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters has been catching some nice Squid, Bream, Tuskfish, Flathead, Whiting, Flounder and Squire. On the Tweed River Brad has been targeting the deeper holes in the upper reaches of the river and finding some nice Flathead, Jew Fish and Trevally.

Being such a busy time of year on the Gold Coast waterways just remember to be extra patient with your fellow boaties especially at the local boat ramps and take extra care when navigating. Stay Safe.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any great catches or photos you would like to share, please email us and let us know how you went.
