Weekly Report 18/3/11

Estuary: A pretty good week again in the lake with some very nice flathead being landed on live herring. Lesley Collins, who fishes most days, caught her first big flattie this week – 95cm and 16lb. She landed it on a live herring along the back of The Paddock. Her husband Greg also dropped a larger fish the next morning as he was netting it. The Forster Fishing Carnival has now been in full swing since last weekend starting with the ABT Hobies and the Megabucks BREAM comp last weekend. A good range of bream and flatties have been weighed in live (then released) ranging from the 500g mark to 4kg for the flattie section.
Blackfish have started back with some nice fish around a kilo up near the back of the leases near Barclays. Plenty of baitfish around plus good reports of massive schools of mullet cruising the lake from the bridge south. Breakwalls are fishing well with plenty of small soapie jews being landed with the occasional larger fish.
Rocks: Not much to report other than a few guys fishing Charlottes Head each afternoon for bonito plus the odd king. A few regulars from Taree fished Seagull Point last Saturday night to hook onto a large tiger shark whilst floating a live slimy out. After a 45 minute fight the shark won and swum off. A bit close for comfort for those swimming at the nude beach or at Elizabeth! A few reports of guys trying their luck at Flat Rock for the start of LBG but to date no positive reports.
Offshore: Some nice trag still being landed near the Ballast plus up north towards Crowdy Head. A good bag of jew caught early morning near the Barge. Reports of those fishing the FFC this week have been mixed with some boats landing good quality mixed bags whilst others have struggled.
Beach: Big greenback tailor down along Nine Mile and up near Janies Corner. Many customers have had a good week on the beach with fish from 1.5kg common, but the big greenbacks are 4kg plus. Some whiting have also been caught on the northern end of Nine Mile near the beach carpark at Blackhead.
