Weekly Report 22/7/11

Estuary: The bad weather has certainly kept anglers inside keeping warm, but those that have put on the wet weather jackets have been rewarded. The Step and along the eastern shoreline of Wallis Island is producing great catches of bream plus the odd whiting and garfish. Bream seem to be awake up to hardbodies at the moment with bait fishos floating a Hawkesbury prawn or a strip bait having plenty to talk about. Bream around the mid 30cm mark are very common along with reports of fish up to 42cm. I fished The Paddock last weekend and came home with 6 bream with the smallest 29cm. I fished striped tuna fillets on a 92247 hook with a small ball sinker. A little berley now and again and they were on. Anchor up about two boat lengths off the rack wall to give yourself a chance before the fish duck for cover. Rocky and Greg have been fishing Point Rd each morning for blackfish with mixed reports – some mornings a bag full and the next only 1-2 fish. Green weed is a problem to get locally but up the coast a bit in different areas it is plentiful. The breakwall is a bit quiet with a few reports of small jew along with a few tailor at the ends.
Rock: Local rock spots have been a bit quiet so the regular reporters have ventured up to Crowdy Head. I have been told that the drummer are thick along with XL groper up there. Black crabs were the pick of the baits.
Offshore: Offshore is still fishing very well if you can get out. Snapper are everywhere from plate size to the biggest this week being 12.5kg – photo in store for proof! All sizes in between have been reported with around 2kg common. Most anglers have fished south for reds. Leatherjackets are still en masse everywhere so rig up for them. A few reports of good trag up off Elsie’s.
Beach: Janies Corner has tailor from 1kg to 3kg. Seems as though the salmon have thinned out a bit this week. Nice bream being caught off the beach near Smiths Lake entrance, along with good sized whiting scattered along Seven Mile.
