Weekly Report 10/2/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 10, 2012 2:43 pm

We finally starting to see some cleaner water around the headlands and out to sea. Last week the conditions were a little rough but we are starting to see some fish coming in. Bottom bouncers fishing the northern reefs are getting some nice snapper with a few pearl perch and trag out past 50 meters. Mackerel are not on the bite yet after the colour but the bait is returning so they won’t be far away. Most of the action has been around Hat Head with some nice Spanish caught trolling lures while yellowfin are in fair numbers from the Hat to Fish Rock. Kingfish around the Rock are coming up with knife jigs working well. Livies have returned to the buoys and bait grounds.
The river is not spectacular at the moment, not so much the dirty water but there is a lot of weed is still coming down. There are whiting about with a few bream along the walls; from the boat ramp to the mouth is your best bet. Jewfish are in fair numbers at the end of the wall taking lures and squid. Through The Cut towards Clybucca there have been whiting, bream and some nice flathead. There is some live bait around off the Jew Bite.
The beaches are cleaner now. Smoky beach is fishing well for some nice whiting and the odd bream while there have been reports from Hat Head of small jew out of the surf. Front Beach and Little Bay have been producing some good whiting. We almost lost one of our locals off the rocks last week so please take care and watch the swell – it sneaks up on you.
