Report 7/5/15

Early morning high tides, good for fishing!

On the Beaches; Anglers have been getting into quality fish along the beachfront with the best time to go being on sunrise, if you can pair it with a run in tide than even better. The gutters along Marcoola Beach north to Stumers Creek have been fishing exceptionally well for sea bream, tarwhine and dart. Try a mix of bait small pillies, beach worms, mullet gut and squid can see you getting yourself into a bit of action. Tailor are starting to come through the gutters with better quality fish getting caught after dark. Black Magic’s snapper snatcher rigs can be used quiet effectively for tailor also, all you need is half pilchards and a couple of wraps of bait thread to help hold them on the hook. However my favourite tailor rig has to be a larger pilchard rigged on a set of 5/0 gangs with a tinsel head slid down onto of your gangs to really get them stirred up.
In the River; Bream have been thick on the run in tide around Labalsa Park in the Moololah River and also the Black Banks stretch with, mullet gut and cured worms getting best results. The key to bream fishing in these two areas is to use burley, and fish very light sinkers to only just hold the bottom, about 8lb leader is ample making sure you have a long trace (about 60-70cm). Circle hooks are by far the best when chasing bream it allows the angler to set a loose drag and virtually let the fish hooks themselves, also you greatly reduce the amount of hooks swallowed by the fish.
Offshore the wind reports doesn’t leave much to be desired. But if the conditions look right to make a trip out Caloundra 8 and 10mile has been fishing well for sweetlip and squire with most fish being caught on sunrise. If you’ve got a bigger boat and want to chase bigger snapper then plan a trip out the northern end of the Banks with good models getting caught up to 4kg.
