Report 4/11/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Nov 04, 2016 1:21 pm

The past month has delivered plenty of good weather to head offshore and get into a few reef fish and plenty of pelagics. As the temperature starts warming up the big numbers of red emperor and large mouth nannygai start to head into the deeper water around that 60-100m mark. There has been some really solid captures lately on the outside of the reefs, larger coral trouts and jobfish have also been common amongst the reds as well. Well dressed jigs have been working a treat accounting for some big fish as well. Large fresh squid baits or cuttlefish heads are definitely the pick of the baits when headed to the reefs.
Michael had a great time recently while fishing off West Point when this monster Spanish mackerel took a lightly weighted piece of pilchard drifted back in his burley trail.

The mackerel have been around in really good numbers lately along the reef edges where the bait has been congregating, especially big Spanish mackerel. The outer reefs have also seen plenty of yellow fin kicking around in large schools, some solid fish have been caught up around the 25-30kg mark, this size fish will often take just a trolled hard body such as a laser pro.

The close to the barramundi season is quickly approaching so the creeks will be a popular spot this weekend for one last crack. Reports have been a little sketchy of late, but there have been nice fish getting around the creek mouths and deeper holes. The better reports have been from those soaking a few livies out, but big paddle tail soft plastics used with a sow retrieve have been working quite well as well for the bigger fish. There have also been really good numbers of legal fingermark getting caught in the creeks which are always a welcome bi catch when fishing in the local creeks.
Kai and Wyatt recently ventured to Princess Charlotte Bay landing this quality Barra.

Wil has been working hard to beat his brother’s best fish and patients finally paid off with Wil landing this nice Barra in the Burdekin recently.
