Report 29/1/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Jan 29, 2018 11:20 am

The fishing over the past week has been nothing short of sensational with some awesome catches from right across the state and beyond. The Kingfish and Tuna have yet again dominated the reports and why shouldn't they with SBT in abundance and some great size kings getting caught. The tuna have well and truly made their presence felt over the past week with fish well over 30kg being taken right along our coastline. It doesn't get much better than casting stickbaits at tuna this big and places such as Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Apollo Bay and even out the front of both our bays worth a look.

The kingfish fishery locally has gone from strength to strength with all the normal haunts producing fish from places such as Cape Schank, The Rip, Flinders, Wilsons Prom etc. Furthermore the Marlin season is well underway with staff members Duffy and Lee Rayner getting stuck into the action this week with some terrific fishing off Eden. Locally there has been no shortage of whiting, pinkie snapper, gummy shark and squid from both our bays. Lastly, we are open Australia day from 10-4 so if your planning on heading out for a fish over the long weekend swing by the store and have a chat to the boys.

Port Phillip Bay
We received the following report from Magnet Fishing Charters. "What an awesome time it is to fish around Melbourne. The amount of options at the moment is endless. Here at Magnet fishing charters we have had another great week on school sized snapper, southern calamari, king George whiting, Australian Salmon and short finned pike. The amount of bait in our bay is amazing as is definitely driving these predatory fish. With another Hot spell coming up conditions look ideal to get amongst the local action.

PPB Heads
The fishing at the entrance to the bay has been exceptional with kingfish ranging from 4-10kg being taken on most fishable days. Jigging and live baiting is still the most common method for targeting fish in this area. The odd school bluefin tuna have also been cruising around this area so it pays to keep an eye on the water and have a couple of skirts or stickbaits on the ready. There has also been some thumping big salmon frequenting this area which make for great fun on light tackle.

The whiting continue to dominate most of the reports out of Westernport with some very consistent fishing being had. However it was the fishing at the entrance to the bay and offshore from Flinders that really caught the eye of a lot of anglers over the past week. Kingfish ranging in size continue to be caught from right along the coast line out from westernport. The SBT also made an appearance off Flinders with one school coming within casting distance of the Pier. Look for the bluefin to become a very reliable target over the coming months, as they did last year. There has also been some great offshore shark fish out from flinders with multiple customers getting stuck into the Makos over the past week.

Apollo Bay
There is some magnificent fishing to be had out of Apollo bay with the crew from hit n run fishing charters catching some excellent sized kings of late. There has also been some great gummy shark fishing and the odd tuna being taken out of Apollo Bay. The kings have really fired up over the past week with fish showing up every along our Coastline. Literally any headland or offshore reef along the Victorian Coastline is worth a look for these fish at the moment.

Port Fairy
Scott Gray has been getting stuck into these enormous fish that are available right on his doorstep at Port Fairy. There has beens some phenomenal fishing from this part of the world over the past week with school bluefin well over 30kg plus kingfish over 1m. What more could you possibly ask for. The tuna and kings have been caught casting Nomad and Rapala stickbaits. Those trolling lures have also had success on small 5in skirts.

Ovens River Bright
Shan Coutelas caught this lovely Ovens river brown trout of 40cm fishing Bright using worms.

Eildon Pondage
Our beloved sometimes staff member James has been having a ball the past few days at eildon pondage. James has caught some awesome trout to 7lb with all fish caught on Rapalas and spoon whilst walking the banks.

You just never know what you might catch when you go fishing! It’s these unusual catches that keep things interesting! This was certainly the case when good customer Pete Henry and his son Pat headed out off Merimbula for a day marlin fishing. While they didn’t get the marlin their bycatch was certainly very welcome when this 24kg Wahoo grabbed one of their lures.

Staff members Lee Rayner and Lee mcduffie caught some nice marlin the last couple of days off Eden. Switching marlin of the dredge and teasers is so much fun and a ver exciting technique. 3fish from 5 bites and they raised a couple more fish for the trip.
